THIS ARE MOON SKA NYC (R.I.P. 1983-2000)

Moon Ska

Moon SkaMoon Ska Records USA was many different things to many different people. Some said it was a store front in the East Village of NYC that sold Ska stuff exclusively. Some could state that it was a record label that obsessively released nothing but Ska music. Others could say it was a completely independent music label that single handedly brought the Ska sound to the United States in the early 1980’s. Whichever way you cut it, it’s all about SKA!Ska art

Moon Records, as it was originally known named as a tribute to the legendary Sun Records until a legal wrangle with an older Blues label with the same name forced the new moniker “Moon Ska” and was without a doubt America’s number 1 source for Ska music. Founded by British born Rob “Bucket” Hingley of The Toasters and operating independently since 1983 until it’s untimely demise in 2000 it was America’s first and longest running Ska label.

Moon Ska released albums from the USA’s finest like The Toasters, The Slackers, Hepcat, Let’s Go Bowling, Dance Hall Crashers, The Scofflaws, Skinnerbox and the NY Jazz Ensemble to name a few.

Laurel Aitken

Moon Ska also released domestically in the USA some of Europe’s finest acts like Laurel Aitken (UK), The Trojans (UK), Bad Manners (UK), Dr Ring Ding & The Senior All Stars (Germany), The Busters (Germany) and Holland’s finest Ska export Mr Review. There have also been releases from Aussie Ska Stars The Porkers, and Japan’s Rude Bones.

Toasters

Back in 1983 the Ska scene really had no precedent in the United States when Bucket founded the label by putting out records for his own Ska band, The Toasters. While 2-Tone enjoyed popularity at the end of the late 70’s and early 80’s in Europe that established “Ska” as a household word, “Ska” in the United States was simply non-existent. Through faith and belief in the style, the subculture and above all the music, Ska directed the work of Moon Ska Records to stay the course over the years until the point where Ska become a household word in the USA, and in fact all over the world.

No Doubt

Over the years Moon Ska released numerous compilations highlighting the very best of some of the US local scenes, like New York (NY Beat back in 1985 was the first ever USA Ska comp), California Skaquake Volume One featuring rising stars like the Dance Hall Crashers and Pop-Ska heroes No Doubt. While other compilations featured the best of Florida featuring none less than Less Than Jake, California (again!), and on a world-wide basis Australia & New Zealand and Japan as well as British and French Ska compilations.

Less Than Jake

Although it was Moon Ska’s Skarmageddon’s contemporary Ska scene series of double CD’s featuring the best of new Ska in the U.S. which received wide acclaim and included tracks by the likes of Less Than Jake, Buck-O-Nine, The Slackers, MU330 and Stubborn All Stars amongst others.

In the States Moon Ska releases were promoted in-house to college radio (where many of their releases regularly charted in the CMJ Top 200), select Ska-friendly commercial radio stations, zines and the alternative music press. Over the years they learned where and how to get the word out about their releases to the Ska fans. Reviews of the releases appeared in such diverse publications as Alternative Press, WARP, Flipside, CMJ and huH. Moon Ska Records was also featured in stories about Ska music in the Billboard, Time magazine and Alternative Press and even the New York Times.

Skazette

But the word was spread more successfully by the The Moon Ska “Skazette” newsletter influenced by the legendary late 1980’s Punk and Ska newsletter “The Link” printed and distributed by the ultra influential UK based Punk and Ska label Link Records run by none other than Fatty Lol Pryor who would later go on with Buckets blessing to start Moon Ska Europe in 1998. The Skazette was published bi-monthly and is filled with the latest news regarding Moon Ska bands and their releases. Each issue reached thousands of readers (a combination of people in the Ska industry and Ska fans). Information regarding Moon Ska’s new releases, back catalogue, band news and info, booking contacts, tour dates, in fact everything. The Skazette was to be superceded by the Moon Ska website, which was one of the first and most active music web sites around at the time.

Moon Ska also produced music videos in-house in a true DIY spirit with their own video promotion/production team. Some of the videos could be seen popping up on MTV and M2 (MTV2) and regional shows like Are-OH-Vee and Music Link. Moon Ska’s music also appeared in sound audio beds for TV shows like MTV’s “Singled Out”, “MTV Sports” and “Spring Break”, HBO’s “Sex Bytes” and the infamous Toasters cut for Nickelodeons “Kablam!” This led to several tracks appearing in films like Trimark’s “Chairman Of The Board” and indie films like “Bang” and “Bleached”.

Moon Store

The now legendary Moon Ska NYC store front was originally located at 150 East 2nd Street off the then “lively” Avenue A before moving to 10th Street between 3rd & 4th Avenue. It became a hang out for bands and Ska fans alike and managed to sell records well below chain store prices as well as stocking Ska records from across the globe.

Against racism

Ska music is best when it is seen and heard live. Many of Moon Ska’s top bands toured the US all year round in support of their releases – and to bolster the burgeoning Ska scenes that sprang up in major metropolitan areas all over America. Moon Ska co-sponsored several national Ska package tours, such as the now legendary Skavoovee, Ska Punks NoLooza’s and Moonstomp tours (with the Special Beat, Selecter, Skatalites, Toasters, Let’s Go Bowling, Murphy’s Law, Scofflaws and Pietasters to name a few). Additionally, Moon Ska co-sponsored the immensely successful New England Ska Festival. Although socio-political historians will note more highly the Moon Ska and Asian Man Records 1998 co-sponsored “Ska Against Racism” tour featuring The Toasters and Less than Jake.

Moon CDIn the same year Bucket convinced his old mate “Fatty” Lol Pryor who had run Punk and Ska labels Link Records and Dojo Records to start Moon Ska Europe. The label was to be completely run separately from Moon Ska NYC licensing in releases from it’s American cousin but also releasing European based acts. The label went onto release some of the biggest UK Ska-Punk acts like Spunge, King Prawn and Whitmore as well as European only releases from USA Ska-Punk legends like Less Than Jake, Buck-0-Nine and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones.

Moon Ska NYC had been courted by many major record labels eager to make the Moon Ska label a major owned subsidiary, it is understandable why Bucket had more than a serious think about this because of the number of bands that had deserted Moon Ska for bigger deals and labels without any thought of the Ska scene in general or just lack of plain old fashioned loyalty. Bucket had also been worried about being away on tour with The Toasters, as the label was growing bigger and bigger and had doubts about whether the team left behind could cope when he was away, remember no-one at Moon Ska had ever worked at a record label before, and this was days before easy access emails and mobile phones! But Bucket just didn’t feel right about taking the label out of it’s indie roots.

Moon Ska NYC patch

Unfortunately in 2000 when the major label induced “USA Ska Bubble” burst throwing indie stores and distributors into a panic causing massive returns and unpaid bills, Bucket must have wished that everyone had stayed calm and kept the true indie spirit alive. One actual indie distributor crashed going bust owing Moon Ska over $100,000, this with some unscrupulous behaviour of one Moon Ska employees firmly banging the nails into the Moon Ska NYC coffin.

However because Moon Ska Europe was a separate entity it was unaffected by the demise of Moon Ska NYC, and carried on business as usual although some people tried their best to pass on the word that it had also shut down too....no such luck eh suckers!

Ska World

Moon Ska Europe went from strength to strength in fact helping establishing a European Ska-Punk scene during the following years. Moon Ska Europe changed it’s direction and name in 2006 to Moon Ska World to release more Ska and old School Reggae influenced acts like The Upsessions, The Big and the Dub City Rockers who rightly big up Moon Ska and Robert “Bucket” Hingley on their debut 2009 album “Peace, Love, Faith, Hope, Respect, Co-exist”. Basically just Keep the Faith!
