Rhoda Dakar began her career with the 2-Tone movement, as lead vocalist with all-female band The Bodysnatchers. Their first single, "Do Rocksteady", b/w "Ruder Than You," written by Rhoda and Gaz "Rockin Blues" Mayall, took them into the charts (No.22 in 1980) and onto Top of the Pops. The Bodysnatchers only released one more single "Easy Life" b/w "Too Experienced" contribute a live version of "Easy Life" for the the now legendary "Dance Craze" film sountrack. Although this excellent film about 2-Tone included also included the live tracks "007 (Shanty Town)" and "Let's Do The Rocksteady".
Rhoda went on to guest with The Specials, both live and on record. Releasing a single "The Boiler", a haunting tale of date rape, much played by John Peel, but ignored by daytime BBC still managed to reach number 35 in 1982 was recorded with a version of the Special AKA. A later incarnation of Special AKA recorded the "In The Studio" album, from which came the acclaimed 1984 Top Ten single "Free Nelson Mandela"...the song that really woke up the British pysche to the problems occurring in South Africa at the time. |
In the interim, Rhoda has worked with artists as varied as Apollo 440 and Dr Robert of the Blow Monkeys fame. However, for the last few years, she has revisited her 2-Tone roots, guesting with The Selecter and appearing on a 3 Men + Black acoustic 2-Tone tour with Dave Wakeling (Tthe Beat) and Roddy Radiation (The Specials), plus, of course, Pauline Black and Nick Welsh of The Selecter. Recently she was very proud to have been asked by the legendary Trojan Records to write a foreword for the latest release in their Reggae Sisters series, entitled 'Let Me Tell You Boy'.
Rhoda's first solo album, 'Cleaning In Another Woman's Kitchen', will be released on the Moon Ska World label in May 2007. The album has been recorded and written with Nick Welsh from Skaville UK. They have a rapport which stems as much from a shared sense of humour, as from the fact that they went to the same gigs, bought the same records and loved the same music long before they ever met! |
